IT Business Incubator in CUET Campus

Under the Sheikh Kamal IT Business Incubator project, a 10-story incubation building with an area of ​​50,000 sq ft and a 6-storey multipurpose training building of 36,000 sq ft have been constructed on about 5 acres of land inside the CUET campus in Chattogram.

 

Incubation buildings include:

Startup Zone, Idea / Innovation Zone, Industry-Academic Zone, Brainstorming Zone, E-Library, Data Center, Research Lab, Bangabandhu Corner, Exhibition Center, Video Conferencing Room, Conference Room etc.

There is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab, a machine learning lab, a big data lab, an optical fiber backbone, a sub-station and a solar panel to facilitate the work of entrepreneurs and researchers.

There are also separate corners for banks and IT firms, state-of-the-art cyber cafes, food courts, cafeterias, recreation zones, maker spaces, display zones, press or media coverage zones, own parking facilities, etc.

On the other hand, the multipurpose training building has a well-equipped auditorium with a capacity of 250 people and 8 separate computer lab cum seminar rooms with a capacity of 30 people. Besides, two separate dormitory buildings (1 female and 1 male) with 4 floors each covering an area of ​​20,000 square feet have been constructed. Each dormitory has 40 rooms. In addition, a state-of-the-art research lab with two mini supercomputers will be set up soon.

According to CUET sources, the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the Sheikh Kamal IT Business Incubator, Sheikh Jamal Dormitory and Rosie Jamal Dormitory by joining online from the edge of Ganobhaban. Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Information and Communication Technology Adviser to the Prime Minister will also be present on the occasion. State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak MP will deliver the welcome address. The event will be held simultaneously on online platforms from Ganobhaban, Ministry of ICT and CUET three ends.

Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET) is the only institution of technical education of the south-east region of Bangladesh. It is situated on 163 acres of land blessed with natural settings and only 25 km away from the city of Chittagong. With existing urban facilities comprised of expert faculty of the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE), Department of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) and Institute of Information & Communication Technology (IICT) as well as the students having brilliant academic track records, CUET is an ideal place to set up ICT incubator In addition, the CUET authority has shown its keen interest to set up ICT incubator in the university campus.

The officials from the MoICT and BHTPA identified a suitable section of land of about 25 acres in the CUET campus which is alongside the Chittagong-Kaptai road secured by a boundary wall at road side. In order to establish ICT incubator at CUET the amended (PPNB) has been approved by the economic department on 8th November 2012. As per the directions of economic department the amended PPNB has been sent to the finance ministry through ICT ministry for promulgating government order.

Objectives:

• To turn the newly graduated students from the ICT related disciplines market ready of global competence.
• To provide favorable environment of ready infrastructure to foster potential entrepreneurship in the ICT sectors.
• To mitigate the crisis of skilled manpower in the ICT field.
• To foster linkages between industry and university for effective technological research and invention.
• To promote knowledge based software industry to realize digitally enabled Bangladesh.

State Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Mr. Junaid Ahmed Palak has said that Block Chain can be one of the investment sectors in Bangladesh. On 6th October he made the remarks at a press conference on "International Block chain Olympiad (IBCOL-2021)" to be held in Dhaka from October 8 at the BCC Auditorium of ICT Tower in Agargaon, Dhaka. Junaid Ahmed Palak said, "Startups in our country are having a lot of success and have brought in over 500 million foreign investments in the last five years."

Palak said universities and educational institutions need to come forward to encourage block chain and include block chain in their curriculum. We are going to set up more than 5,000 new Sheikh Russell Digital Labs so that the teenagers of this country can know about a futuristic technology like block chain.

He further said that a state-of-the-art Sheikh Russell Digital Lab is being set up in the country to empower the present and future generations of children and adolescents in future technology. The country has already set up 8,000 "Sheikh Russell Digital Labs". More 5,000 Labs and 300 "Schools of the Future" are being set up. There are also plans to set up 10,000 more "Sheikh Russell Digital Labs" in the future and another 5,000 Sheikh Russell Digital Labs at an early stage. Through which millions of students are being educated in information technology.

"We want to build a middle-income country in 2031, a high-middle-income country in 2031 and a developed Bangladesh in 2041," Palak said. The specific target set by the people's leader Sheikh Hasina is that now the GDP size of 350 billion dollars will be 700 billion dollars in 2031 and 1 trillion dollars in 2041. Now beside the income from our garment industry, the income of our expatriate workers, agriculture and all the other labor-dependent industries, Sheikh Hasina wants to build a knowledge-based society and a technology-based economy. And we have far-reaching plans for all of this. And as part of that plan, we chose "block chain technology."

Mentioning that digital Bangladesh is no longer a dream, the state minister said, 160 million people are now able to enjoy the benefits of Digital Bangladesh. In the last 12 years, the four pillars of the "ICT sector" have stood on a solid foundation under the leadership of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the Prime Minister's Adviser on ICT. Around 1.5 million young people across the country are contributing to the ICT industry by working in the software, hardware and BPO sectors. In the last 12 years, it has been possible to create employment for 1.5 million young people, while the ICT industry, which was only 26 million Dollars before 12 years, has now grown to 1.3 billion Dollars.

Connected online, the president of the Hong Kong Block chain Society, Doctor Lawrence Ma thanked Bangladesh for successfully hosting the International Block chain Olympiad (IBCOL). He hopes that through this arrangement, it is possible to find advanced technological solutions through the use of block chain technology. Founded on 2012, block chain wallet is the world's most popular wallet with over 53M created in 180 countries.

Other guests were present at the press conference including the Executive Director and Additional Secretary of the Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) Md. Abdul Mannan, PAA, Additional Secretary of the Department of Information and Communication Technology Khandaker Azizul Islam, BRAC University CSE Department’s Professor Mohammad Kaikobad, Chairman of International Block chain Olympiad 2021” and Founder and CEO of Technohaven Company Limited Habibullah N Karim.

Twelve winning teams of "Blockchain Olympiad Bangladesh 2021" are participating in this year's Bangladesh episode organized under the theme "Inspirational Empowerment and Innovation". The International Blockchain Olympiad (IBCOL) is specially organized every year for the younger generation. The much-anticipated Olympiad, which started in Hong Kong, is going to be held in Bangladesh for the first time outside Hong Kong. Students from all over the world are participating in this global competition to become winners. Prizes worth a total of more than 40,000 Dollars have been awarded to the winners. Many national and international block chain experts will join the event as judges and speakers. More than 50 teams from 12 countries are participating in this global competition from China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Philippines, UAE, Iran, Indonesia, Netherlands, Nepal, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The "International Blockchain Olympiad 2021" will kick off with an inaugural ceremony on Friday (8th October 2021). The 3-day Olympiad will run until Sunday (October 10). This year, besides other events, a total of 4 seminars are being organized. Seminars will be on “CBDC and Cryptocurrency”, “e-Governance”, “Identity and Privacy” and “FinTech”. Team Primus from AUST-Bangladesh will Compete in FS UK 2019

Formula Student UK, one of the best names in the competition in the world's automotive sector. It is the Europe's most established educational engineering competition. More than three thousand students of the University from around the world take part in the 'One Sitter Racing Car' competition. The 21st edition of this competition is going to be held in July, 2019.

Each year, Formula Student sees over 100 university teams from around the globe travel to Silverstone to compete in static and dynamic events that will test their preparation and hard work: who will be crowned the winner of Formula Student 2019?

Three racing car competitions are renowned all over the world. Among them, the 'Formula Student UK' competition under the Society of Automobile Engineers-SA is the topmost. They are participating in Bangladesh for the first time. Besides, the 'Cell Eco-Marathon' and 'Bridgestone World Solar Challenge' competition are well-known.

For the first time, 'Team Primes’ a group of Bangladeshi students are going to take part in this competition in the artistic engineering competition. The 31-member group of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) will visit “Silverstone Circuit” ground at Northamptonshire from 17th to 21st of July in Britain. All members of 'Team Primes' are desperate to take victory. Besides, these young people are waiting for the opportunity of acquiring knowledge.

The journey of Team Primus to fulfill the dream was not easy. All the members worked really hard. The first thing was need of a '600-710 cc engine. But at present the maximum import approval from the government is only '165 cc' in Bangladesh. In this situation, the request was made by the team to import the desired engine to the government. It took a lot of time to get the permit to buy the engine.

The inconvenience of the raw materials to build the body of the racing car was the second challenge. The required raw materials were brought from India to build the whole racing car as per their design and calculation.

Team Primus said that it was a long-standing dream of presenting Bangladesh in Formula Student UK competition. Initially 21 students of the Mechanical Engineering Department, 5 of the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering, 3 of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and two teachers together formed the team.

Team Primus got the opportunity with Business Logic Case - BLC. Through the BLC they informed about the cost of production of their cars, subscribers, numbers of products produced annually and the possibility of marketing. Later in the final competition through submission of few more reports, they are participating as the first and only team from Bangladesh.

Team Primus is in the 2019 CLASS 1 CONFIRMED LIST. In Class-1 category there are total 86 final participants and in Class-2 there are total 37 participants. About IT Business Incubator in CUET Campus

The country's first IT business incubator is going to be established in CUET (Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology) campus soon. At the university level, this type of IT business incubator is being built only in CUET. The construction work of this incubator will start in the beginning of July inside the campus area on 5 acres of land.

The government has taken up the project to build an IT business incubator in CUET to make the country's capacities affordable and to develop skilled manpower in ICT sector. On 6^th June 2017, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the project at the meeting of ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council).

Under the supervision of Bangladesh High Tech Park Authority (BHTPA), the decision was taken to implement the project from July 2016 to July 2019. At that time the cost of this project was estimated to be near 77 crore taka.

However, the construction of IT Business Incubator could not be started at the time fixed due to the replacement of some officials associated with the implementation of the project, and due to the complexity of appointment of consultant organizations.

Although the initiative to build this IT Business Incubator in CUET campus was stuck due to some complications. Recently, all of these complications have been resolved for the efforts of the State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak. Hopefully it will be possible to start building the country's first IT business incubator in early July.

Construction work is going on after some years of taking up the project - that's why the cost of construction may be slightly increase.

Small details about the IT business incubator:

• Total land area for the project is 5 acres.

• Up to 7 floors of the 10 storey’s building will be used as incubation building.

• There will be a total of 35,000 square feet space of 5000 sq ft on each floor.

• In addition to the incubation building, two dormitories (1 for men, 1 for women) building will be built up to 4 floors on 6 storied foundations.

• There will be a total of 40,000 square feet space, 5000 sq ft on each floor.

• A multipurpose training center building will be built up to 6 floors on 8 storied foundations.

• Total 36,000 square feet space, 6000 sq ft on each floor.

IT Business Incubator will bring revolution in the technology sector. The youth of our country is running behind the job. They cannot show the courage to be an entrepreneur due to various limitations. This IT Business Incubator will help students become entrepreneurs in the technology sector.

CUET's IT Business Incubator will open the door for potential young people for creative youth. Anyone here can bring any kind of creative idea. Using this idea the responsibility to create a productive product is up to the incubator authority.

The students of our country are very meritorious and hardworking. A revolution in the country's technology sector will happen if they get proper training and new invention facilities through IT Business Incubator in CUET campus. In the IT sector, local capacity will increase multiplied.

Monica Ali and the Brick Lane

Monica Ali (born 20 October 1967) is a Bangladeshi-born British writer and novelist. In 2003 she was selected as one of the "Best of Young British Novelists" by Granta magazine based on her unpublished manuscript; her debut novel, Brick Lane, was published later that year. It was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. It was adapted as a 2007 film of the same name. She has published three additional novels.

Ali was born in Dhaka, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1967 to a Bangladeshi father and English mother. When she was three, her family moved to Bolton, England. Her father is originally from the district of Mymensingh. She went to Bolton School and then studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Wadham College, Oxford.

Brick Lane:
Brick Lane - named after Brick Lane, a street at the heart of London’s Bangladeshi community - follows the life of Nazneen, a Bangladeshi woman who moves to London at the age of 18, to marry an older man, Chanu. They live in Tower Hamlets. At first her English consists only of “sorry" and “thank you;” the novel explores her life and adaptations in the community, as well as the character of Chanu, and their larger ethnic community. The novel provoked controversy within the Bangladeshi community in Britain. Some groups thought Ali had negatively portrayed people from the Sylhet region, as they constitute the majority of the Bangladeshi immigrants living in the Brick Lane community.

The Observer described Chanu as “one of the novel’s foremost miracles: twice her age, with a face like a frog, a tendency to quote Hume and the boundless doomed optimism of the self-improvement junkie, he is both exasperating and, to the reader at least, enormously loveable.” Geraldine Bedell wrote in The Observer that the “most vivid image of the marriage is of her [Nazneen] cutting her husband’s corns, a task she seems required to perform with dreadful regularity. [Her husband] is pompous and kindly, full of plans, none of which ever come to fruition, and then of resentment at Ignorant Types who don’t promote him or understand his quotations from Shakespeare or his Open University race, ethnicity and class module.” The novel was well-received by critics in the United Kingdom and the United States, and shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

Film adaptation:
In 2007, the book was adapted as a film of the same name. Starring the Indian actress Tannishtha Chatterjee, the film was distributed both in the UK and internationally. When production was underway in 2006, some of the Bangladeshi community opposed Ruby Films' intention to film parts of the novel in the Brick Lane area. They formed the "Campaign Against Monica Ali’s Film Brick Lane.”

The writer and activist Germaine Greer expressed support for the campaign, writing in The Guardian: “As British people know little and care less about the Bangladeshi people in their midst, their first appearance as characters in an English novel had the force of a defining caricature ... [S]ome of the Sylhetis of Brick Lane did not recognize themselves. Bengali Muslims smart under an Islamic prejudice that they are irreligious and disorderly, the impure among the pure, and here was a proto-Bengali writer with a Muslim name, portraying them as all of that and more.”

Akram Hossain Khan, MBE (born 29 July 1974) is an English dancer of Bangladeshi descent. His background is rooted in his classical kathak training and contemporary dance. Khan was born in Wimbledon, London, England into a family from Dhaka, Bangladesh. He began dancing and trained in the classical Indian dance form of Kathak at the age of seven. He studied with Sri Pratap Pawar, later becoming his disciple. He began his stage career at the age of 13, when he was cast in Peter Brook’s Shakespeare Company production of Mahabharata, touring the world between 1987 and 1989 and appearing in the televised version of the play broadcast in 1988.

Following later studies in Contemporary Dance at De Montfort University and Performing Arts at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and a period working with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Brussels based X-Group project, he began presenting solo performances of his work in the 1990s. In August 2000, he launched Akram Khan Company. His first full-length work Kaash, a collaboration with Anish Kapoor and Nitin Sawhney, was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2002.

As choreographer-in-residence and later associate artist at the Southbank Centre,[4] he presented a recital with Pandit Birju Maharaj and Sri Pratap Pawar; and A God of Small Tales, a piece for mature women for which he collaborated with writer Hanif Kureishi. He remained an associate artist at the Southbank Centre until April 2005, the first non-musician to be afforded this status, and is currently an associate artist at Sadler's Wells Theatre.

In 2008, he co-starred with Juliette Binoche in a dance-drama piece called in-i at the Royal National Theatre, London. In summer 2006, Khan was invited by Kylie Minogue to choreograph a section of her Showgirl concert. Khan appeared as a huge projection behind the singer as she performed. The songs were set in an Indian temple scenario, inspired by a trip Minogue made to Sri Lanka.[7] He has made pieces for the Ballet Boyz and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. Khan and his dance company performed at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Live music was provided by Emile Sande singing 'Abide With Me.

No more details about the company has been found on the web portals but it has formed by some successful entrepreneurs and angels the co-founder of the popular video sharing website YouTube, Jawed Karim. Meet the team below:

Kevin Hartz:
Kevin is the co-founder of Eventbrite, a popular event registration service. Previously, Kevin was co-founder and CEO of Xoom Corporation, an international money transfer company providing service in over 30 countries. Kevin also co-founded ConnectGroup, a start-up providing high-speed Internet access to the hotel industry. ConnectGroup was acquired by Lodgenet in 1998. Kevin holds a BA and BS from Stanford University and an MA from Oxford University. He has been an early-stage investor and advisor to startups such as PayPal, Geni.com, Friendster, Flixster.com, and Trulia. Kevin is also a Sequoia Technology Partner at Sequoia Capital. Jawed Karim:
Jawed Karim was born in Merseburg, East Germany, in 1979 and moved to West Germany in 1980. His father, Naimul Karim, is a Bangladeshi American researcher at 3M. His mother, Christine Karim, is a German scientist and research associate professor of biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. Jawed co-founded the YouTube to enable individuals worldwide to broadcast themselves. Prior to YouTube, he was one of the first engineers at PayPal. Jawed received a BS in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MS in computer science from Stanford University. He is a Sequoia Technology Partner at Sequoia Capital.

Keith Rabois:
Keith is Chief Operating Officer at Square, the innovative new payments company founded by Jack Dorsey that empowers anyone to accept payments everywhere. Keith specializes in transforming early-stage startups into successful businesses and has deep expertise in the financial services industry and government affairs. An accomplished executive, entrepreneur and angel investor, Keith has held leadership roles at PayPal, LinkedIn, Slide and began his career practicing law at the prestigious Sullivan & Cromwell. Keith was an early investor in several high-profile Internet companies including YouTube and currently serves on the board of directors of Yelp, Xoom, and Milo. Keith holds a JD from Harvard Law School and an undergraduate degree in political science from Stanford University. He is also a Sequoia Technology Partner at Sequoia Capital.
